[2020.05.12] Seoul’s ‘autonomous driving mobility’ to run on roads from today

14 Mar 2022

Seoul's autonomous driving mobility will begin demonstration on complex urban roads from the 12th.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will announce the start of the demonstration at Sangam Cultural Plaza with seven companies, including Mapo-gu, Seoul Institute of Technology, LG Uplus, Undemand Solution, and Control Works, and two universities, Yonsei University and Kookmin University.
Earlier, the city created a test bed for autonomous driving in Sangam with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in June last year, and has been developing autonomous driving technology and piloting autonomous vehicles in the city through cooperation with 25 industry-academia-research institutions since September last year.
With this launching ceremony, we will take a step further from the temporary pilot operation so far and pick up and demonstrate citizens on the complex urban roads.
Demonstration services include ▷, a non-face-to-face shared vehicle that calls with an app and uses it to its destination without a driver's license ▷ a proxy parking ▷ a shuttle bus that travels around the area and carries transportation vulnerable ▷ a delivery robot that carries logistics in areas.
To this end, the city will deploy 10 self-driving vehicles in Sangam alone, including 3 buses, 4 cars, and 3 delivery robots. Shuttle buses were manufactured by Undemand Solution, Spring Cloud, SML, and Automos, respectively. Yonsei University and tool space will demonstrate two shared vehicles converted into Niro and Rei at Sangam DMC. Hanyang University, LG U+, and Controlworks will participate in the proxy parking, while Undemand Solution will participate in the delivery robot.
Self-driving vehicles use vehicle wireless communication networks to receive information on the color of traffic lights and when signals change every 0.1 second. This is to prevent traffic light recognition vision sensor errors that may occur in emergency situations. In addition, various dangerous situations such as jaywalking pedestrians in blind spots or front accidents are delivered through the next-generation intelligent transportation system (C-ITS) infrastructure.
From the 8th of next month, applications for shuttle bus boarding will be received on the Seoul Traffic Information website (http://topis.seoul.go.kr). It will be available from the 16th of next month. The shuttle bus is Digital Media City Station and Nurim Square. It is a route that circulates 3.3km from Digital Media City Station. It runs free of charge a total of 54 times for six days a week except Monday. The city is also considering increasing the number of trips per week to a total of 108 according to the response of citizens.
In addition, civic experience groups for shared vehicles, proxy parking, and delivery robots will be openly recruited to provide opportunities for citizen participation.
The city aims to lead the global market by settling untact (non-face-to-face) mobility early in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era. Hwang Bo-yeon, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Urban Transportation Office, said, "Future transportation is not just about autonomous vehicles running in the city center, but about freedom of movement without discrimination."
